This has been a momentous week at Medtia Square as we held our Future Finders graduation ceremony. On Thursday afternoon all our students, their families, governors, employers and friends got together to celebrate our successes this year..

5 of our students have now moved into paid employment, 3 have set up permanent independent volunteering jobs and two are work ready and are actively seeking paid work with our support. As Mr Quinn quite rightly pointed out, what we do in Oldham really is unique and is admired by other schools across the country. We really are paving the way with our innovative provision that places our young people in the heart of their community in a meaningful job for life. This year’s cohort of students have made us so proud, from Aisha who was the first student to get full time paid employment after 5 years of trying to Sam who has become completely independent and who is a real asset to Oldham Library. Yesterday’s graduation showed how all the hard work has paid off..

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my outstanding team of job coaches, Gemma, Anne-Marie and Colin, who have worked tirelessly this year to ensure that our students reach their full potential. And to our lovely students who finish with us in two weeks’ time, we would like to wish you the best of luck for the future. Thank you for working so hard this year – you have been a pleasure to work with. We will always be here if you need us!

Over at Horizons this week, Emma’s group have enjoyed visits into Oldham, to the swimming pool at Oldham Leisure Centre and to Dunwood Park..

Jeff’s group have had another busy week, enjoying the sunshine at the park with Ability Wheelz..

..and getting ready for Father’s Day with some woodcraft for the ‘Best Dads’..

As usual their community access had a strong focus on eating out and they made time to stop for a quick snack on their walk around Oldham..

On the way back to Horizons they stopped for a few pictures by the new Odeon and restaurant row – some of the young people wanted to stop at Costa Coffee in the Old Town Hall but they decided to save that for another visit in the near future..

Shelly’s group have had a busy few weeks with their usual activities..

..and they enjoyed a lovely trip to Hollingworth Lake, complete with picnic..

Hayley’s group have been getting up to all sorts! They have been outside in the sunshine, cooling off in water play..

..visiting Ability Wheelz..

..and getting messy in foam while also making sure John didn’t leave the building clean (which he never has much chance of in their room really, as there is usually some sort of messy activity going on!). The young people have enjoyed some rebound and relaxed in the ball pool..

They have helped out with baking cheese cakes and biscuits, planted their veg..

..and tended their flower garden as well as getting creative in arts and crafts making their Father’s Day cards – wishing all our dads a fantastic day on Sunday!

There are some more lovely pictures to share with you but due to a slight technical hitch we will have to upload them on Monday – please check back again then.

And now to our latest ‘Worker of the Week’, Chris. Chris is on placement at The Atrium Café and he has worked extremely hard over the past few weeks. When he arrives he immediately puts on his apron and washes his hands and then starts stocking the fridges and snacks. He made an excellent impression with the First Choice Homes film crew last week when he was filmed at work and interviewed about The Atrium. His customer service skills are really good and he always wishes all the staff at FCHO a good day and thanks them for their custom. He has come a long way with his money skills over the past term and he doesn’t even want a break now as he likes to carry on with his job role. Well done, Chris!

To finish today, I am going to make a personal plea…as you may know from reading this blog, I also run The Manchester Show Choir. Next month, we are holding a huge family festival in Alexandra Park (in Manchester not Oldham) to raise funds for The Christie and the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Here is the poster – if you fancy coming along, please ask at Medtia reception for tickets..

We are also running a fundraising raffle for the same charities with prizes that include an overnight stay at The Mecure Hotel, £100 vouchers for Alberts Schloss, A Meal for Two at Gusto, A Meal for 2 at Refuge, Golf for 4 at Wychewood Park and many many more fab high value prizes. Again, tickets can be purchased from the Medtia reception! Thanks in advance for your support.

Have a wonderful weekend- it looks like it is going to be a hot one!
