This week has been particularly busy at Medtia Square – in addition to all our usual activities we hosted our very first open evening and even battled through the snow to raise money for Pudsey Bear!

Our Medtia Young People’s Council met earlier this week and chose Children in Need as one of our charities to support over the academic year. We had a great time fundraising on Friday with dressing up, a cake sale and a pathways dance off..

I was particularly impressed with some of the staff and their outfit choices – from Star Wars onesies to Pudsey ears, it was lovely to see everyone getting behind the day and raising valuable funds for the charity.

Jeff’s group enjoyed a great outing on the Metrolink to the Christmas Markets in Manchester (officially as part of their travel programme – all the Christmas stalls were just an added bonus!)..

The young people also ventured up to Shaw..

..and the cold weather hasn’t stopped them getting out and about as usual, they even managed to dodge the rain at Ability Wheelz..

I have spent a couple of days this week at the British Association for Supported Internships (BASE) national conference. I was extremely inspired by some of the work going on nationally and also proud to say that we are streets ahead compared to many other towns across the country in our innovative approach to work experience and supported internships. Two extremely exciting developments were announced at the conference:

  • apprenticeships will be available for students working from Entry Level 3 within the next 12 months
  • in the latest green paper, the government advise that all students with an EHC Plan should be accessing a supported internship programme unless there is a good reason not to

We understood the importance of supported internships over 7 years ago when we set up Bridging the Gap but it is fantastic to see that this is now being recognised at a national level and that we will continue to be supported in our mission to secure employment for our young people. It is also extremely exciting to hear that apprenticeships are becoming more accessible for our students as this will open up many more opportunities for them to gain employment.

This seems a good time to update you on the progress of our interns on the Future Finders course. As we approach the end of our first term, students are now applying for jobs and have been handing out CVs around town. They are all doing brilliantly on their placements as you can see in these pictures of them at work…
