It has been great to be back at Medtia Square after my Easter holiday for yet another busy week which has seen many groups access the building.

Horizons has been a hive of activity this week as we have taken on a huge collaborative project with the Royal Oldham Hospital. On Wednesday a number of our young people went down to the hospital to collect the supplies needed for 1000 ‘comfort packs’. These packs contain tooth brushes, deodorant and other essential items that patients may require when in hospital and we will be very busy putting these together over the coming week..

This is part of our ongoing partnership with the Royal Oldham Hospital and our volunteers are really excited to be helping with this mammoth task!

Continuing the theme of volunteering and employment, our young people have begun their volunteering placements at Dr Kershaw’s town centre shop, working 3 days per week. As you can see, they have been kept extremely busy preparing items to be sold..

I think a few of them may even have picked up some bargains for themselves! Our young people are really enjoying this work and they are extremely valued by the Dr Kershaw’s team – well done, guys!

Emma’s group have once again continued to access the community doing a range of activities including swimming, Wheels for All and their new weekly shopping trip to Sainsbury’s to buy ingredients for their cooking sessions. They were on a mission this week and had a great time making a cake for Horizon’s manager John who thought he’d kept his birthday a secret..

Emma’s group have also added a weekly visit to Oldham Library and the Gallery to their busy schedule which they are particularly enjoying..

Jeff’s group joined forces with Jeanette’s group at the Learning Centre this week and the young people really enjoyed getting together again, especially as it involved a party to celebrate George’s birthday..

We look forward to more get-togethers in the near future!

Jeanette’s group were also celebrating wins this week (like myself) after placing bets on the Grand National last Friday..

Many of us will now have a valid reason for being Gary Barlow fans for life and I am sure all you die-hard Take That fans are also enjoying your winnings on the back of ‘Rule the World’   🙂

Our Future Finders have had a busy first week back after their Easter break as they have begun visits and taster sessions to their new placements which they will be starting full-time from Monday. This term’s placements are at Hollinwood Acadmey, Oldham Community Leisure, Oldham Coliseum and Oldham Food Banks. Our students have also been canvassing around Oldham this week, doing a brilliant job of advocating the project and promoting it to employers across the town to try and bring more businesses on board. If you have links with a local employer who may be able to offer placements to our students, please do get in touch!

Once again this week, Medtia Square has been an exciting, busy and vibrant place to be – from Lumenus rehearsing ‘Shrek’ and Digit4ll busy printing canvas orders to big dance sessions where a variety of groups come together, it really is shaping up to be my favourite site within the New Bridge Group (but don’t tell any of the other heads of site that!!) We are reaping the rewards of having a town centre campus and we would now like to open our facilities up to past students. As I have mentioned previously, we are setting up a weekly group starting on Tuesday 26th April for former students to get together and socialise. Please see below for details of our new ‘Medtia Meet Up’ which is open to all past students aged 21-30 who may be bored at home and welcome the opportunity to catch up with old friends. PAs and family members are welcome too! If you are interested in coming along, please give me a ring or confirm your place via email..
