I’m going to start off this week by sharing a proud moment at Horizons..
Cameron hasn’t used a walking frame for a number of years now but this week he received a new one and just look at how well he’s done in only a few days. As you can see, Cameron loves his new independence in moving around and he has already grown in confidence. It’s wonderful to see this improvement and what a difference it’s made in such a short time!
The young people at Horizons have been really busy and Gary has news of his group..
We have said a fond farewell to Nathan Walker who is leaving us this week..
Nathan is off to enjoy continuing his work at Saddleworth School and his volunteering at the Link Centre. Nathan will definitely be missed at Horizons, as those who know him will agree, he is a larger than life character who always brings a lot of fun. Good luck Nath, all your friends at Horizons hope everything goes well for you..
The young people on Floor 3 at Horizons have had a visit from Rohema Khan who is the project lead for Oldham Council’s ‘Get Oldham Working’ team. Rohema came to tell us all about the programmes they deliver and how our young people might be able to access them. One of the opportunities they offer is a six month paid work placement with a range of employers in Oldham, something we hope to be getting involved in soon.
Yet more ways for our young people to develop their skills and experience – we’ll keep you updated on any developments with this.
This week we held our first ever Parents’ Evening at Medtia Square for our Key Stage 5 students in Activ8, Digit4ll and Lumenus and it was lovely to see so many families attending. We really enjoyed sharing our young people’s successes with you and we hope you found it a useful and informative evening. If you didn’t get chance to let us know how it went, please click here to fill in this short questionnaire to give us your feedback, we really value your comments and your continued support.
Speaking of successes, we have established yet more links with employers this week for our young people looking to gain work experience – we have been speaking to Tesco, Oldham Library, the new Parliament Square Coffee Shop and Oldham 6th Form College café about placements. We’ve also pulled together a list of all of the young people across the Group who are currently accessing work placements, pre-internships or supported internships and I was thrilled and amazed to discover that over 62 of our young people are now on placements across Oldham each week.
The number will continue to grow over the next 12 months and, of course, this work is complemented by our student enterprise groups who are extremely busy at this time of the year creating products and Christmas gifts to sell locally. If you are really quick there is still time to order a special something personalised with your favourite image, please contact email@example.com or ring 0161 883 2403 for details..
Our Key Stage 5 pathways students have welcomed a number of very interesting visitors. On Thursday Luke Ambler spent the morning at Medtia and delivered a workshop focused on physical fitness, overall well-being and improving mental health as part of his #itsokaytotalk campaign to remove the stigma around depression and mental health..
You can find out more about the fantastic work they did here.
Oldham Theatre Workshop came in and performed ‘First fall of snow’, a very thought-provoking piece raising awareness of the dangers of legal highs commissioned by Oldham Youth Council..
Our students then took part in a workshop with the actors, followed by a question and answer session where they reviewed the performance and gave their feedback on the information they had gleaned from it – it definitely had an impact on our young people, as Matthew described in his blog.
I would like to wish you all a wonderful weekend of Christmas shopping! If you are off to the Trafford Centre on Saturday, come along and see me in action with my choir – we will be singing in The Orient to raise money for The Christie.
