This week I have been based at The Atrium café and it is wonderful to see so many young people from across the Group accessing placements here. I was particularly impressed with Kingsley this week who is on a pre-internship programme with us and is based at the café for two days per week..

Kingsley has been helping our chefs and he was in charge of making the quiche special on Wednesday, check out these pictures..

Mohammed also continues his Future Finders placement at the café and this week he has been trained to make cheese and potato pies, our best seller! Here he is in action..

Of course, it isn’t just at The Atrium where our young people are accessing placements. Gary’s group at Horizons continue to work at their placements at Dr Kershaw’s charity shops and at the Link Centre. They have had some great experiences over the last few weeks, not just on their placements, so I will hand over to Gary for an update..

Floor 3 at Horizons have recently been working with young people from ‘The Challenge’ as part of the NCS programme and part of their challenge was to raise funds and collect resources to carry out a piece of community work. The young people had to raise funds by addressing local business people and put across a ‘Dragons Den’ type pitch – they did very well and raised enough money to buy paint, soft furnishings and lights. The group then gave their time to paint what was rather a drab, unexciting room and transformed it into a bright, colourful place for our young people at Horizons to enjoy. We would like to extend a massive thanks to everyone from the NCS, just look at the room now..

The young people from Gary’s group have also been enjoying a spot of culture with a visit to the Manchester Art Gallery recently..

They viewed exhibitions including ‘Fashion and Freedom’ exploring changes in fashion after the First and Second World Wars and Boris Nzebo’s ‘Urban Style’..

This wonderful art gallery has many Masters displayed and the group discussed the merits of many of the famous paintings. Here you can see some of the group sitting in front of William Etty’s fantastic work, ‘Ulysses and the Sirens’ which the group discussed at length, talking about the story and its depiction..

Activ8 continue to enjoy being based at Medtia and are now attending Oldham Leisure Centre on a regular basis with their new memberships. They are also using their Fitbits to track their progress and activity – I need to take a leaf out of their book, I think! This week they have created a video to show us what they have been up to, as Mr Greenway explains..

Activ8 have had another action packed week; on top of our academic sessions at Medtia and school we now have our OCL gym passes and they’re being utilised to the full by both groups, with the Key Stage 5 boys using them in their own leisure times as well as their independent lunchtimes and our Activ8 gym sessions on Thursdays. We have also started our Fitbit programme with all of the Key Stage 5 group now wearing a Fitbit to monitor their daily steps, calorie intake and expenditure (no more McDonalds dinners now lads, eh…!), heart rate and distance travelled each day. This has led to some very healthy competition between the group with each of them keen to be top of the leader board when we analyse our results every Monday afternoon.

As you will see on the video below, we have also had a visit this week from our Sky Sports Mentor, Sophie Cox. Sophie has represented Team GB at two Olympic games, in London and Athens. She won silver medals in the 2004 and 2005 European Judo championships in Romania and the Netherlands. Activ8 take part in the Sky Sports ‘Living for Sport’ project every year and use it in their sports leaders sessions to engage younger pupils using sports. This has been used this year by the Key Stage 4 group while leading the Year 8 intervention sessions on a Friday.

Just a reminder that next Thursday 17th November is our open evening for those interested in joining Horizons or Future Finders next year – please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Daniel
