Today saw our very first coffee morning here at Medtia Square and it really did feel like a celebration of everything we have achieved over the past 12 months, complete with homemade cakes created by our young people (which I discovered after my third were not ‘Slimming World friendly’)
Gary’s group at Horizons have finished their latest volunteering project, putting together sepsis packs which they proudly handed over to the Royal Oldham Hospital..
Hayley’s group at the Learning Centre have been up to their usual antics..
They’re off out for the day to Blackpool Zoo on Wednesday, goodness knows what they’ll get up to there! We’ll bring you all the pictures, don’t worry. Back at Medtia Square, Shelley’s group have enjoyed continuing with their Mediterranean theme and made their own minestrone soup..
They didn’t let a spot of rain keep them indoors..
..and enjoyed finishing decorating their Halloween canvas ready for families to see at the coffee morning today..
Emma’s group have also been preparing for Halloween, have a look at some of their fantastic pumpkins here…
Our Future Finders have been very busy with our students continuing to work hard at OCL, the Premier Inn and the Atrium café..
We have also welcomed some new placement providers on board – Stefan attended an interview at Voy Garages and will be starting there after next week, in addition to his work with primary children as a sports assistant at Mayfield School and St. Theresa’s School. Aisha started a placement at the Rainbow Bereavement Trust on Tuesday following a successful interview before beginning her second placement at the RSPCA charity shop where she will be working on Wednesdays and Thursdays after half term.
To celebrate their first half term’s hard work, the students enjoyed an enrichment activity trip to Extreme Air, Oldham’s new trampolining centre (and also somewhere we are hoping to gain placements at in the future!) As you can see, the visit was a huge success..
..they particularly enjoyed jumping off the high platform onto the big air bag..
We now have over 80 young people attending Horizons, 40 students based here on a Key Stage 5 Pathway and 11 new interns on our Future Finders course! We have grown massively and it was great to hear such positive feedback at our coffee morning from parents and young people who are loving our new building and our innovative provision. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that after half term we will have over 60 young people from across the Group out on work placements each week! Our team of job coaches and support staff at Horizons are doing an incredible job of placing our young people in the community and offering a wide range of opportunities to ensure that our young people on an employability pathway can move into independent volunteering or paid employment when they leave our Group. We continue to develop and expand our offer and we are working with more and more employers each week. We are now in early discussions with the new Odeon cinema and hope to able to offer placements there in the near future.
Social enterprise is also high on our agenda and as our café continues to flourish over at First Choice Homes, we are now looking to open a number of satellite businesses across the town including the launch of our ebay shop next half term where staff, young people and families will be able to drop items into us that they want us to sell on their behalf via ebay or gumtree. Our young people will source stock, create adverts and will deal with paypal payments and ecommerce.
It is also brilliant to see that our Digit4ll students are extremely busy with their own enterprises. Today they set up a stall to sell their printing goods including personalised canvases and mugs..
If you are interested in ordering anything from them for Christmas, please email email@example.com
The Digit4ll students are also extremely busy with their filming and editing service and are currently working on a new promotional film for our Future Finders course. I am looking forward to sharing this with you when it has been completed.
All that is left is to wish those of you who have one a wonderful half term break. I will be back with another blog in a couple of weeks as I am off on holiday to find some sun!
