As usual, we have had a non-stop week at Horizons! Our young people have been busy enjoying all their different activities including their popular dance sessions..
Jeff’s group had fun on the bikes at Ability Wheelz with their friends before making an exciting discovery on the walk back from the park..
..Oldham’s newest attraction, Extreme Air Trampoline Park! Naturally they decided to go and explore and were very impressed..
It looks like great fun and we are planning to start using the facilities in the near future – I hear that the Future Finders have beaten us to it and are paying a visit next week for their end of half term enrichment session!
This week Shelly’s group have enjoyed a sensory walk through the woods at Chadderton Park..
Paul and Tuma enjoyed feeling the leaves and conkers in the woods. They will be using the collection they brought back for our sensory Autumn and Halloween canvas which families will be able to admire when they come to our coffee morning on Friday!
Shelly’s group have also enjoyed tasting foods from around the world, shopping for the ingredients and exploring new textures, tastes and flavours from the Mediterranean..
..and of course they had fun at Ability Wheelz..
Now, did anyone catch the Oldham Chronicle on Thursday night? Look at this great article which celebrates our new social enterprise ‘The Atrium Coffee Shop and Eatery’ over the road from Medtia at First Place..
It is fantastic to have our work recognised and after spending another week over at the cafe, I am pleased to say that it continues to be extremely busy and popular with First Choice Homes employees – our students are doing an incredible job at providing a first class service.
Since September we have appointed two new job coaches to support young people from across the Group in work placements and pre-internships. Charlotte and Maria are doing a fantastic job at supporting young people across the organisation and already have students in placements at a local furniture factory, local schools, nurseries and of course, The Atrium! Well done to all of our students who continue to make a very favourable impression on employers across the region.
I have a attended a number of reviews this week and it is fantastic to see what an impact our internship programmes have on our young people! I have heard of interview opportunities at The Premier Inn, potential jobs at Manchester University and I have had an overwhelming response from employers who say that our students are excellent employees and are in demand! It’s brilliant to hear and I look forward to sharing news of students finding jobs in the coming weeks!
This week we get a behind the scenes look at what our fantastic students in Lumenus have been up to in their new studio space which is looking fantastic! These students do bring a lovely sparkle and drama to the building, which as a former drama teacher I absolutely love! Over to Mrs Chappell for her news on Lumenus this week…
Lumenus have been looking at different historical drama styles over the last half term during their ‘Skills Days’. This week they have completed a short Moral Play inspired by Greed, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. David had the task of directing the play, concentrating on developing his ‘sensitive leading skills’. All the other students participated in creating, writing and performing the script focusing on skills such as moving and speaking simultaneously and developing a depth of character. We think they did a pretty good job!..
On Wednesdays students have been learning skills in preparation for an audition next week for the cast of our summer spectacular, Aladdin and Jasmine…… Who will be who?… Only the lamp knows!!! (if you are not impressed with that joke, it could have been worse – we were considering using “What kind of pet did Aladdin have? A flying car-pet”…..)
To finish today I would like to share with you some pictures from our training session on Friday morning where we ran through the evacuation procedure for the building. It is safe to say that Horizons manager John had a relaxed time as he was lying down throughout….
I hope you can come and join us for our coffee morning on Friday, our young people are really looking forward to welcoming their friends and family. Have a great weekend,
