Well, here we are just a couple of weeks into the term and the young people at Medtia have settled in really well and our latest additions are enjoying their new home!
Our groups from Horizons have been up to their usual activities, including swimming at Oldham Leisure Centre..
and also venturing further afield to see what the facilities are like at Chadderton..
They’ve been shopping for supplies..
..before putting them to good use..
They’ve made the most of the weather at Alexandra Park..
..helped get to grips with the weeds..
..and even found time for some dancing..
..and a spot of reception duty 🙂
Last week I told you all about our new café (you can read about it here if you missed it). We have been busy with all the preparations for opening and we are extremely excited to reveal our brand new logo!
We love it and we can’t wait to open the doors on 26th September! I am thrilled to inform you that the kitchen at The Atrium Cafe will now be offering hot food delivered daily for all our young people based at Medtia. We will be sending letters out next week with all the details and you will be able to order on a daily or weekly basis. I have had a lovely time sourcing food and beverage suppliers for the new café and after visiting a fantastic local supplier of coffee, I am now a ‘coffee convert’ after never drinking it before! It really is fantastic coffee and we have now partnered with The Ancoats Coffee Co. who will not only be supplying our coffee but will also be training our staff and students as baristas – just think of all the jobs available at places like Starbucks and Costa Coffee… We are very excited about this development, another great partnership offering real opportunities for employment for our young people.
We sent out letters this week around independent travel into Oldham at lunch times. Whilst this was sent to all our Pathways and Future Finders parents, we understand that this is really only an option for those who are already travel trained and access the town independently in their own time. For our other young people who may not be ready to go into town alone, we will be offering the chance to have their lunch on the grass at the front of the building accompanied by staff to get some fresh air during this unusual hot spell that we are having. If you require any further information or have any queries about this, please do get in touch.
Our Future Finders have been on taster visits in preparation for starting their placements in the next week or so. We are thrilled to be placing students at the Premier Inn for the first time this year; there are some real opportunities for employment within the Premier Inn group and we are looking forward to building our relationship with the Oldham hotels over the coming weeks.
Our Pathways students have also had a fantastic week. Lumenus are very excited as we have just announced that this year’s school production will be Aladdin the Musical! I have my eye on the role of the Genie of the Lamp – I’ll keep you posted on how my audition goes!
Activ8, not content with a gruelling walk in the heat as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s work, have also begun their rugby training..
The Digit4ll students have had another great week at Medtia and are showing real maturity at the new location of our IT Pathway. One of the exciting projects they are developing is our Young Enterprise ‘Enspire’ which is run solely by the students and involves printing, media production and technical support. They have just voted for their Enterprise Director following a campaign by Tom and Brandon to gain support. After a very close vote the winner was elected on Wednesday – congratulations to Brandon, our new Enterprise Director!
I was particularly impressed this week by a very professional email from Digit4ll who have arranged a consultation for me to discuss some brand new promotional films for Bridging the Gap and Future Finders. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our meeting next week, I am sure that you will do a fantastic job!
Have a wonderful weekend, let’s hope this warm weather sticks around!
