I am very excited and happy to be writing this blog today from our new building, Medtia Square, which officially opens on Monday. We have had an extremely busy few weeks preparing the building for our young people and our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that everything will be ready on time. On Monday, Horizons was closed for the day to allow our staff to prepare the classroom spaces at Medtia. With the lift out of action, it was a rather tiring day for us all but the end results are fantastic as you can see in these images of the building…

Our Horizons provision will be based on the second and third floors of the building. We will have our own ICT suite, our ‘Admin Hub’, two classroom spaces, a quiet room, a kitchen and a newly adapted bathroom. Our young people will continue to access activities within the community including Wheels for All, swimming sessions, visits to cafés and parks along with their work placements, although our twice-weekly dance sessions will now take place in our new dance and drama studio on the ground floor of Medtia Square!
This week the young people at Horizons have been very much involved in our preparations for the big move. They have assisted in packing resources and bringing them over to our new site and they have had the opportunity to visit Medtia Square on numerous occasions over the week. It is fair to say that everyone is very excited about the move and we can’t wait to spend our first full day here at our new centre on Monday.
This Tuesday saw us hold an open day for our new site and we were thrilled to welcome over 30 families to tour the building – not just those of the young people who currently access our provision but also families who may be interested in accessing Horizons or Future Finders at a later date. Their feedback was extremely positive and we look forward to showing off our new building at upcoming events which we will, of course, keep you posted about. If you were unable to join us for Tuesday’s open day and would like to look around the building next week, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either myself or John Holland to arrange a visit.
Our Future Finders officially moved into Medtia Square on Tuesday and they have spent the week assisting our premises staff in getting everything ready for the official opening on Monday. Their help has been invaluable – the young people have yet again excelled themselves and have been keen to get stuck in and work as a team. From hoovering carpets to moving resources and furniture, they have been an integral part of our preparations this week – thank you, guys!
Our Future Finders will return to their usual placements across Oldham on Monday but should make arrangements to be dropped off and collected from Medtia Square if they do not travel independently.
If you are bringing a young person to Medtia Square on Monday, please ensure that you have a drop-off permit which can be collected from Reception. There are three drop-off bays in front of the main entrance to the building; please make sure these spaces are only used for dropping young people off. We have ten allocated bays in the car park outside the building, the rest is managed as a pay and display car park. Please do ensure that you have a permit as we would hate for you to get a parking ticket!
I would like to finish my blog this week by once again thanking all the staff who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks and indeed months to make this move possible. A special mention needs to go to Alan and Eddie in the Premises team and Abdul, Craig and Nick in the ICT team – they have worked all hours to ensure that we have the best possible facilities in place for our young people. All our hard work has been worth it though, and we are now finally ready to move into a modern, town centre building that offers a vibrant environment and state of the art facilities for our young people.
We have a busy weekend ahead moving all the furniture from New Bridge Horizons to Medtia Square but the good news is that I’m prepared – I have a large supply of chocolate in my new desk to get the staff through what promises to be a long day tomorrow! Thankfully the lift has now been serviced and is back in full working order so that should ease things for us slightly! Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to sharing more pictures with you next week of the young people in their new home.
