This will be a shorter blog than usual as I have spent most of my week at Medtia Square involved in the preparations for our grand opening! We have had new carpets fitted which look fantastic, and the builders are putting the finishing touches to our two new adapted bathrooms. We finally completed all legal matters regarding the building yesterday which means that Medtia Square is now officially our new home! It is very exciting now that everything is really beginning to take shape, and we are looking forward to welcoming you all to our Open Day on 23rd February to share our vision for the building and the development of our provision in the future.
On Tuesday I had the privilege of taking Mr Quinn to Oldham Leisure Centre where he could see for himself the fantastic progress our Future Finders have made. I know that he was particularly impressed with the level of responsibility that has been given to our young people and with how well thought of they are both by OCL staff and the customers who use the building and its facilities.
Another well done this week to Max (aka Mr Motivator)… a group of architects and designers visited OCL on Monday to meet with the managers. They commented on how good it was to see so many young adults with additional needs working at the centre. After chatting to Max, they were really impressed with our Future Finders supported internship model and have now requested a meeting with myself to discuss the possibility of offering placements within their own organisation. Max was a brilliant advocate for the project, and as a result we may be able to engage yet another employer and offer more fantastic opportunities for our young people to access employment.
At Horizons this week, our young people have been caught in the snow! Yes, you read that correctly, snow!!! The 10 minute blizzard timed itself perfectly to coincide with our visit to the park on Tuesday, and here are the ‘before and after’ shots to prove it..
Our young people have also begun orientation visits to Medtia Square this week, just to see the outside of the building. They are getting extremely excited about the move. We have been supporting the young people who may find the move more challenging through our social stories which have also been sent home for your ongoing use.
Other activities this week have included visits to Wheels for All, Oldham Leisure Centre for swimming, the Honeywell Centre café and Alexandra Park, not forgetting a very energetic dance session at the centre..[Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”21″ gal_title=”12th Feb dance”]
Our resident DIY experts have finished their Valentine’s day wood blocks this week and they really are looking lovely…….but who will the lucky recipients be?! I’m very sad to report that none of these beautiful gifts have landed on my desk yet – or any cards either, for that matter!
I am away next week to spend some time with friends and my god children in London, so my next blog entry will be posted on Friday 26th February. I would like to wish those of you who will also be on holiday a great week off. For everyone else, have a fantastic time at Horizons next week – it will be our busiest week since opening, with over 150 young people accessing our provision across the 5 days!
